It is estimated that in 2025 there will be between 1,000 and 1,100 million tobacco smokers in the world and for this reason the well-known Philip Morris brand has developed the PMI Science project, which consists of creating a catalogue of reduced risk products (RRP) with the aim of promoting a smoke-free future. To this end, the New York-based tobacco company has invested more than 6 billion Dollars annually in smoke-free research since 2008 and has a large team of scientists, researchers and technicians.


According to Philip Morris International, anti-smoking campaigns created by public institutions in many countries tend to focus on avoiding initiation, reducing consumption and even encouraging tobacco cessation, but this project aims to encourage regular tobacco smokers to switch to smoke-free products that are considered reduced risk, as they are products that do not burn tobacco and therefore contain a lower amount of harmful and potentially harmful components than the smoke of a regular cigarette.

PMI Science has created 4 smoke-free platforms to date. Two of them are tobacco heating and two of them are electronic vapor products.


This platform consists of a device that heats the tobacco unit by means of an electronic system and without combustion. The first model created consisted of a pocket charger and a device into which the tobacco unit was inserted. This model has an approximate load of 6 minutes or 14 puffs. In the second model of the same platform, the device was connected to the charger, thus increasing the charging time to approximately 10 uses.

The mode of use is very simple. The tobacco unit is introduced into the device, which once lit begins to heat the tobacco. When the heating plate reaches the operating temperature, the device vibrates and the indicator stops flashing. That’s when you can start smoking.



In this platform we find a single product that works in a similar way to the previous platform, since it is also a product of tobacco heated without combustion. It has a pressed carbon tip that functions as a heat source and is illuminated with a phosphorus. The temperature of use is around 350ºC and the heat is transferred from the carbon tip to the tobacco, which generates an aerosol that is inhaled through a nozzle. This product, like the usual cigarettes, is a single-use product. Another major difference between this platform and the previous one is that this product does not depend on electronics to heat the tobacco, but the same device regulates the temperature.



On platform 3 we find the first steam product. This product produces a nicotine salt vapor that is formed by a chemical reaction of the nicotine with a mild organic acid. PMI Science has tested two types of products within this platform, one that works electronically and one that does not. Finally, they have opted for the product that does not use electronic means.



Finally, platform 4 consists of an e-vapor device powered by a battery. This product transfers a liquid containing nicotine to a MESH technology heater, producing an aerosol that is inhaled through a nozzle. This electronic cigarette consists of two parts: a fixed device and a consumable head. In the consumable head we find the MESH technology heater and the electronic liquid tank. The device has a sensor that warns you when the liquid level is low in order to avoid overheating.


With the PMI Science project, Philip Morris International has been able to combine science with smoking and thanks to this we have a catalogue of products that, for sure, will gradually increase in variety.
