Virginia tobacco leaves

Virginia tobacco leaves

The tobacco type Virginia is the most produced worldwide. The main producing countries are China, Brazil, India, United States, Argentina and Tanzania.

The plant of the Virginia tobacco variety can measure up  1.80 m high and the different heights make every part of the plant possess different characteristics. The leaves of the base are larger so provide lots of tobacco, but have little flavor or taste. The leaves in the central part of the plant have a higher concentration of nicotine than the leaves of the top of which are smaller but have a higher concentration of aroma and flavor. For this reason, Virginia tobacco plants are harvested in phases, from base to top.

The drying process of the Virginia tobacco lasts seven days and is an artificial drying because the leaves are hung in barns to which hot air is applied. If the air is too hot or too cold, it can affect the quality of tobacco.

Once dry, the Virginia tobacco leaf acquires its distinctive bright golden yellow color. Another main feature of these sheets is that they have a thick central vein.

Virginia tobacco provides the mixtures of a soft aroma but with an intense flavor.
