The vitolas of a cigar
Vitola word refers to two things in the world of cigars. Vitola de salida is the commercial name given to the cigars and it is represented in the ring paper of each cigar to identify the brand and type. There is another kind of vitola, the Vitola de galera. This one relates to the characteristics of the cigar: shape, thickness and dimensions.
What are the Vitolas de galera?
There is a wide variety of vitolas. Some of them are used only to refer to the handmade cigars, such as coronas, delicados, Edmundos, panetelas or robustos. And others are used for hand made or mechanically made cigars, as cenadores, deliciosos and naturales.
Each brand has its own way and measures. On the website Habanos.com you can see some examples of vitolas with its dimensions.
What influences the shape and dimensions of the cigars?
The vitola de galera will cause the smoke of the cigar to be different. For example, a longer and thicker cigar will consume more slowly than a short and narrow one. Whereupon the end of the smoke will have spent more smoke inside, which will make the flavors during smoking are different than if it has been less smoke.
If you’re testing different vitolas, you will see how they change the aromas and flavors.
